THE PAPERBOATS

An international partnership platform for makers of extraordinary theatre for early childhood audiences (4 to 8 year olds).

The PaperBoats is pioneering new ways of connecting theatre makers and new ways of creating theatre, across borders, across cultures and across artistic forms.  Productions have been and are being developed in several countries using shared creative concepts, vocabulary and practices but each with its own unique style and local flair.

Especially on Birthdays is an intimate visual-theatre experience that shares the ups, downs and roundabouts of being a twin, especially on that most anticipated day of the year.

“Playful, interactive and visually striking. Especially on Birthdays explores existential issues relating to time, aging, friendship and conflict. And boy, were the kids into it.”  –Emma Halpern, American Theatre Magazine

Part performance, part game, part celebration, Especially on Birthdays engages children in deeply human stories of friendship, play, giving, receiving, sharing, forgiving and understanding. Productions have been mounted in Adelaide, South Australia,  The Gold Coast Games, The Artground in Singapore, and at TYA/USA’s Conference & Festival and the Alliance Theatre’s Toddler Takeover in the USA.

Especially on Birthdays was named Best Children’s Show at Adelaide Fringe.

Gimme Please exploring the delights of giving and receiving has been developed and presented in Atlanta, Georgia at the Alliance Theatre while a new work on similar themes and called Magic Box, is being created in Austin, Texas. Moonlight was produced in Wellington, New Zealand:  The dark can be a scary place. When Luna’s night-light goes out during a ferocious storm, she must embark on an adventure to conquer her fear of the dark.   Another new piece entitled When the Mirror Bird Sings is being devised in Adelaide.
